Lachlan discovers his ideal career pathway

With personalised support from CoAct Service Partner IMPACT Community Services, young job seeker Lachlan was able to transition into meaningful full-time employment within the aged care sector.

After moving from New Zealand to Australia to live with his grandparents, Lachlan struggled to find a meaningful and fulfilling career path.

Prior to joining the Transition to Work (TtW) program, he had held a few casual jobs here and there, but was unsure of how to go about making a job plan for his future. Lachlan had gained an interest in the aged care sector when he worked alongside his grandfather at Surfer’s Paradise RSL.

I really enjoy the company of mature-aged people because of the knowledge and stories they have to share.

And whilst he was interested in pursuing a career in aged care, he wasn’t sure how to get his foot in the door, or how to complete the required training. With the help of the team at  IMPACT, Lachlan was able to get the tailored support he needed to understand and plan the steps to achieve his goal. In addition to his goal setting, IMPACT supported Lachlan by providing him with clothing to complete his training, resume writing assistance and was always there if he needed to chat or get help while completing his training.

Determined to find success, Lachlan worked steadily through his transition plan, and in a short time obtained his provisional driver’s license, completed certificate III in Individual Support (Aged) and ultimately obtained employment with Blue Care Pioneer Lodge.

For the first time in my life I am financially independent and can finally do the things I want to do. Since getting my job at Blue Care, I’ve saved up for my first car, and my next goal is to travel to Hawaii!

The support I’ve received from IMPACT through the TtW program has been a solid 10. It changed me and gave me a better career pathway.

Lachlan plans to continue his studies, with a Certificate III in Allied Health next on his list. His goal is to live and work on the Gold Coast. When asked what advice he has for other young people who might be struggling to find their path Lachlan says,

Listen carefully and say yes to every opportunity you can.
