What support coordination is NOT

Support coordination is a valuable part of many NDIS plans, but there are common misunderstandings about what it actually covers. Knowing what support coordination doesn’t include helps you plan your supports more effectively and set the right expectations.

It’s not plan management

Plan management and support coordination are two separate services. A plan manager handles the financial administration of your NDIS plan — paying invoices, tracking your budget, and managing financial records. A support coordinator helps you understand your plan and coordinate your services. They’re complementary, not the same thing.

It’s not direct daily support

Support coordination is a coordination and navigation service, not a hands-on support service. Your support coordinator won’t be providing personal care, assisting with daily living tasks, or attending appointments with you in a support worker capacity. Those supports are funded separately in your plan under different categories.

It’s not therapy or clinical treatment

Support coordinators are not therapists or clinicians. They don’t provide counselling, psychology, occupational therapy, or medical care. If you need therapeutic supports, these are typically funded separately in your plan and delivered by registered allied health professionals.

It’s not a guarantee of specific outcomes

A support coordinator can help you prepare evidence, communicate your needs, and navigate the NDIS system, but they can’t guarantee specific funding decisions or outcomes. What they can do is help you make the strongest possible case and support you through whatever the process brings.

It’s not a substitute for advocacy

While a support coordinator can and should advocate for your needs, they are not an independent advocate. If you need someone who is completely independent of any provider relationship to support your rights and voice, a disability advocacy organisation is the right support. You can find advocacy services through the Disability Advocacy Finder.

It’s not only for people with complex needs

Support coordination isn’t just for people in crisis or with highly complex situations. Many people benefit from a coordinator simply to help them navigate an unfamiliar system, get their services up and running, and make sure everything is working well together.
