What job is right for me?

Finding work that matches your ‘type’

Finding a job that’s right for you can be tricky if you’re not sure where you fit. The right type of job will depend greatly on the type of person you are, and a great job seeker service will take your personality, interests and abilities into account to make sure you’re placed somewhere that fits who you are.

Some of the factors you need to consider when thinking about your ideal job are:

  • Your talents – What are your personal strengths and weaknesses? What skills have you gained through work and life that you can take with you into a new workplace?
  • Your interests – What kinds of activities or subjects are you interested in? Do you have hobbies or areas of interest that might benefit you at work?
  • Your style – Think about your ideal work environment. Do you want to work indoors or love being outside? Do you like working with your hands, or prefer to work with your mind?
  • Your values – Understanding your own values can help you narrow down the type of working environments you will find most comfortable.

How to find out what job is right for you

Become aware of your personality type
Are you a naturally extraverted person who loves to be surrounded by people? Or are you the more quiet type who prefers to be alone? If the idea of being left alone to get things done sounds great to you, then a job in sales where you’re required to talk to people all day long isn’t going to be a good fit for you.

Make a list of tasks you enjoy
Are you a planner? Do you love being organised? Do you enjoy caring for people? Are you creative? Do you prefer working in teams? The types of tasks you enjoy, whether in a professional or personal setting, will give you a good idea of the types of things you should be looking for in a job.

Consider your unique skills
Even if you haven’t worked for a long time, you have skills that will help you in the workplace. Make a list of both the official skills you’ve gained in the workforce, as well as those you’ve learned in your personal life to see how they might be transferred into the workplace.

Take stock of your priorities

If you’re the type of person who wants to be home at night to tuck your kids into bed, or free on the weekends for family commitments, then working in a busy restaurant isn’t a good choice. But if you’re super social and love to sleep in then restaurant work might fit you perfectly. It’s all about knowing what your priorities are.
