What is NDIS support coordination?

What is NDIS support coordination?

For many people navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), understanding how to make the most of their plan is one of the biggest challenges. NDIS support coordination is a funded service designed to help people living with disability use their NDIS plan confidently and effectively so they can pursue their goals and live their life in the community.

Support coordination is part of the Capacity Building category of NDIS supports, meaning it focuses on strengthening a participant’s ability to coordinate supports rather than simply delivering a service.

Why support coordination matters

When someone first gets an NDIS plan, it can feel overwhelming. Plans list funded supports, but do not automatically put services in place. A support coordinator works directly with the participant to understand their plan and connect with appropriate supports.

Support coordinators help participants:

  • Understand what is in their NDIS plan and what it can help them achieve.
  • Connect with suitable service providers, community groups and mainstream services.
  • Build confidence and skills to use their plan and make informed decisions.

Levels of support coordination

There are three levels of support coordination that may be funded in an NDIS plan.

  1. Support connection: Helps participants connect with informal, community, and funded supports.
  2. Coordination of supports: Supports participants to organise and manage a mix of services to achieve their goals.
  3. Specialist support coordination: Provides higher-level expertise for participants with complex needs or barriers to service delivery.

What a support coordinator does

Support coordination is about helping you put your NDIS plan into action in a way that works for you. Rather than just explaining your plan, a support coordinator works alongside you to connect supports, solve problems, and build your confidence over time.

Common activities include:

Explaining your plan and managing your funding
A support coordinator helps you understand how your NDIS funding can be used, what each budget covers, and how to track your spending so your supports last for the full plan period.

Connecting you with the right providers
They work with you to find and connect with providers that suit your needs, preferences, and goals. This might include therapy services, support workers, or community programs.

Coordinating supports and services
Support coordinators help bring different services together so they work well as a team. This can include organising appointments, sharing information (with your consent), and making sure everyone is aligned.

Supporting communication and resolving issues
If something isn’t working, your support coordinator can step in to help resolve concerns with providers, adjust services, or find alternative options.

Building your skills and independence
Over time, the focus is on helping you feel more confident managing your supports yourself, so you have greater choice and control.

Preparing for plan reviews and changes
They can help you get ready for plan reviews by identifying what’s working, what’s not, and what supports you may need in the future.
