Violet sets her sights on a career in construction

Violet came to CoAct Connect + Community Solutions as a young job seeker with a clear goal. She wanted to build a future in the trade and construction industry. After leaving school early, she had been actively looking for work for a few months and was ready to take the next step.

As a young woman entering a male dominated industry, Violet showed strong determination. But she was also facing personal challenges that made things harder. These included low confidence, concerns about presentation, and managing ADHD, anxiety and depression.

“Sometimes I struggled to see what I was good at,” Violet said. “But I knew I wanted to keep trying.”

Building confidence and getting job-ready

With support from her mentor at Community Solutions, Violet started working on her confidence and getting ready for the workplace. Step by step, she built resilience and began to recognise her own strengths.

As part of her journey, Violet completed the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Maryborough Jobs Pathway Program. This helped her feel more prepared for work and gave her a better understanding of what employers are looking for. She also completed her White Card, an important ticket for getting into construction roles.

“Violet kept showing up and putting in the effort,” her mentor said. “Even when things felt tough, she stayed focused on her goal.”

Violet also received practical support to remove barriers. She was provided with work clothing, help with fuel costs once she started work, and support to renew her car registration so she could travel reliably. She even explored other pathways, completing a real estate course before deciding that construction was the right fit for her.

A traineeship and a bright future ahead

With determination and the right support behind her, Violet secured a construction traineeship. Since starting, she has been doing really well. She is learning new skills on the job and growing in confidence every day.

Now Violet is focused on building a long-term career in the construction industry. She is proud of how far she has come and excited about what is ahead.

“I feel more confident in myself now,” Violet said. “I’m really glad I stuck with it.”

Violet’s story shows what can happen when young people are given the right support and encouragement. With resilience and the chance to learn, it is possible to overcome challenges and step into a future full of opportunity.
