Understanding mental illness and the workplace
Workplaces can be positive and supportive places, but if you live with a mental health condition you may also face challenges. The good news is there are ways to prepare yourself and know your rights. This article explains what to expect and how to get the help you need at work.
Know your rights
In Australia, it is against the law for an employer to treat you unfairly because of a mental health condition. This means you cannot be refused a job, dismissed, or treated badly just because of your health. You also have the right to ask for changes at work (called workplace adjustments) if you need them to do your job well.
How managers can help
Many managers want to support their team but may not always know how. If you feel comfortable, you could talk with your manager about what would help you. This might include:
- Flexible start or finish times
- A quiet space for breaks
- Clear instructions or written reminders
Your consultant can also guide you on how to have this conversation.
Dealing with challenges
Sometimes, challenges can still come up. If you feel you are not being supported or are being treated unfairly, you can:
- Speak with your consultant for advice
- Contact JobAccess for workplace support
- Reach out to organisations like the Fair Work Ombudsman or SANE for guidance
Building a supportive environment
Workplaces are becoming more aware of mental health. Many now offer employee assistance programs (EAPs), which provide free counselling. Ask if your workplace has one. Even small steps, like connecting with a trusted co-worker, can make your day easier.
Work can be a place of growth and opportunity. Knowing your rights and supports can help you feel more confident.
If you would like more support, talk to your employment consultant. They can help with job search tips, career advice, and connect you to extra services if you need them. You do not have to do this alone.
