Who can help me understand my NDIS plan?
Who can help me understand my NDIS plan?
Getting your NDIS plan approved is a big milestone, but for many people, the document itself can be confusing. Funding categories, budgets, and support types aren’t always easy to decode. The good news is, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Your Local Area Coordinator (LAC)
If you work with a Local Area Coordinator, they can help you understand what’s in your plan and what your funding can be used for. LACs are funded by the NDIS to support participants in the community — they’re a good first point of contact.
Your support coordinator
If Support Coordination is funded in your plan, your Support Coordinator’s role is specifically to help you understand and use your plan well. This includes:
- Explaining each funding category in plain language
- Helping you understand what supports are reasonable and necessary
- Identifying gaps or opportunities in your plan
- Helping you choose providers and set up services
A good Support Coordinator won’t just explain your plan once. They’ll work with you over time, checking in as your needs change and helping you prepare for your next review.
Disability advocacy organisations
Independent advocacy organisations can help you understand your rights and navigate the NDIS, especially if you have concerns about your plan or need support to raise issues. They are free, independent, and on your side. You can find advocacy services through the Disability Advocacy Finder.
Your plan manager
If your plan is plan-managed, your plan manager handles the financial side — processing invoices and tracking budgets. They can help you understand how much funding you have left in each category, which can be really useful context when you’re planning your supports.
The NDIS itself
The NDIS has a range of online resources and a contact centre (1800 800 110) where you can ask questions about your plan. Their participant resources page is a helpful starting point.
Community and peer support
Connecting with other NDIS participants through peer support networks can also be valuable — hearing how others navigate the system can give you practical insight and confidence.
Get started with CoAct Support Coordination Services
CoAct Support Coordination is a new service designed to help NDIS participants get the most out of their plans with the right supports in place.
