The minimum wage is increasing in July: what jobseekers need to know

If you’re looking for a job or thinking about starting work soon, there’s some good news. From 1 July 2025, the national minimum wage in Australia is going up by 3.5%, to support low-income earners.

That means the new minimum wage will be $24.95 an hour, or $948 a week for full-time workers. To find out exactly how this applies to you, a minimum wage fact sheet will be available from 1 July on the Fair Work Ombudsman website.

So, what does this mean for you as a jobseeker? Here’s what you need to know.

More money in your pocket

  • For those entering the workforce or transitioning between jobs, this wage increase means that workers in a minimum wage job will earn more from day one. This increase adds up to about $1,670 more a year for full-time workers. Whether you’re saving for a car, paying rent, or trying to get ahead, every extra dollar helps.

It could open up new job opportunities

  • When wages go up, some businesses put the brakes on recruitment, but others see it as a chance to attract and keep great staff. Employers may be more focused on finding the right fit and offering better conditions to match the pay rise. If you’ve got the right attitude and are willing to learn, this could be a great opportunity to land the job you want.

Keep an eye on your budget

  • While this is good news for workers, it may mean prices go up in some industries — like cafes, restaurants or services. So, it’s a great time to start thinking about how you can make your money go further, especially as the cost of living continues to change.

What if you’re already earning the minimum wage?

If you’re currently working in a minimum wage job, you don’t need to do anything – your employer is required by law to adjust your pay in line with the new minimum rate. The change will apply automatically from your first full pay period on or after 1 July 2025. If you’re unsure whether your pay is being updated correctly, you can check your entitlements on the Fair Work Ombudsman website.

The minimum wage rise is a positive step forward – it means more money in your pocket, and more opportunities to take that next step into work. If you’re job hunting in 2025, it’s a great time to feel optimistic about what’s ahead.
