How support coordinators help with Supported Independent Living and housing

Housing is one of the most significant areas where Support Coordinators can make a real difference in the lives of NDIS participants. Whether you’re exploring Supported Independent Living (SIL), looking at other housing options, or navigating a complex transition, a good Support Coordinator helps you understand your options and makes sure the process works in your best interests.

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living is NDIS funding for support workers who assist people to live as independently as possible in their home. It’s typically designed for people who need help with daily tasks around the home and require support for a significant part of the day or overnight.

SIL is one of the NDIS’s most complex funding areas, and one where having a skilled Support Coordinator is especially valuable.

How a Support Coordinator can help with SIL

  • Understanding your options: SIL isn’t the only housing-related option. Your coordinator can help you explore other supports such as Supported Decision Making, Home Modifications, or Individual Living Options (ILO).
  • Preparing your SIL application: Getting SIL approved requires a detailed assessment. Your coordinator helps gather the right evidence and prepares documentation to support your application.
  • Choosing the right provider: You have choice and control over your SIL provider. A coordinator can help you explore options, ask the right questions, and make sure the provider is a good fit.
  • Managing the transition: Moving into a new living arrangement is a significant life change. Your coordinator helps plan the transition, coordinates with all parties involved, and checks in to make sure things are going well.
  • Problem-solving: If something isn’t working in your SIL arrangement, your coordinator is there to help address it.

Housing options beyond SIL

SIL is not the only housing option under the NDIS. Depending on your needs and goals, your Support Coordinator might also help you explore:

  • Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA): Purpose-built housing for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs
  • Individual Living Options (ILO): A flexible, personalised approach to living arrangements
  • Home Modifications: Funding for modifications to your home to improve accessibility and independence.
