Specialist vs Standard Support Coordination – What’s the difference?
Specialist vs Standard Support Coordination – What’s the difference?
If you have Support Coordination funding in your NDIS plan, you might notice it’s described as either Level 2 Support Coordination or Specialist Support Coordination. These two types of support serve different purposes — and understanding the difference can help you make the most of what’s in your plan.
What is Level 2 support coordination?
Level 2 support coordination (often simply called support coordination) is the most common type. It helps you understand your plan, connect with the right services, set up service agreements, and make sure your supports are working well together.
A Level 2 support coordinator works with you to:
- Understand your NDIS plan and how to use your funding
- Explore and choose providers that match your goals
- Set up services and coordinate them so they work as a team
- Problem-solve when services aren’t working or your needs change
- Prepare for your plan review with clear evidence of progress
It’s designed for people with moderate support needs who benefit from help navigating the NDIS system — without needing intensive specialist involvement.
What is specialist support coordination?
Specialist support coordination is a higher level of support, funded separately in your NDIS plan. It’s designed for people who have more complex needs or face significant challenges in coordinating their supports.
This might include situations where:
- Multiple services need to work together in complex or high-risk circumstances
- There are risks to safety or wellbeing that require careful management
- You’re navigating a crisis or a major life transition
- Standard coordination isn’t enough to address the complexity of your situation
Specialist support coordinators typically have additional qualifications or experience in areas such as mental health, complex disability, or behaviour support.
Can you have both?
Yes. In some cases, a participant’s plan may include funding for both types. Specialist support coordination might be used during a complex period, while Level 2 support coordination continues for day-to-day coordination.
Which one is right for you?
The type of support coordination in your plan is determined during the planning process by your NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC), based on your needs and goals. If you feel your current level of support isn’t meeting your needs, you can raise this at your next plan review. For more information on the levels of support coordination, visit the NDIS website.
