Finding strength in support: Shaquill’s journey begins
Shaquill is a proud young Bundjalung man, with deep family ties to Yuin Country. Growing up in the Northern Rivers, it was clear early on that Shaquill had the determination to achieve great things.

From a young age, he worked hard to support his family—despite not having finished school or ever held a job. Like many young people in similar situations, he faced barriers: limited job knowledge, few opportunities, and no access to reliable transport.
I wanted to work—I just didn’t know how to get started,” Shaquill shared. “I didn’t have a car, I hadn’t finished school, and I felt like no one would give me a go.
That changed when Shaquill joined the CoAct/BUSY At Work program in Tweed Heads. There, he met Sydney, his mentor, and someone who quickly became more than just a guide—he became a friend. With encouragement, guidance, and belief in his potential, Shaquill’s confidence grew. Together, they worked on building his skills and mindset.
Turning point: a traineeship and a new future
Shaquill’s breakthrough came when he was offered a chance to apply for a paid traineeship in construction. With Sydney’s support and coaching, he nailed the interview and was accepted into the program.
This led to something bigger—thanks to the continued support of Sydney, BUSY At Work, and Skill360, Shaquill secured a full-time job through the Skilling Queenslanders for Work traineeship. Today, he proudly works at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, contributing meaningfully and thriving in a role he enjoys.
Getting that job was the first time I really felt seen,” said Shaquill. “It wasn’t just about the work—it was about believing I could actually do it.
Standing proud and giving back
Now, Shaquill stands tall as a proud Indigenous young man with big dreams and a bigger heart. He takes pride in the work he does and is passionate about giving back to his community. His journey reflects resilience, empowerment, and the importance of having the right support system.
With the right people behind you, anything is possible,” Shaquill said. “Now I wake up excited to go to work.
His story is a testament to how mentorship, opportunity, and a belief in potential can change lives. Shaquill’s experience shows what’s possible when the right support meets the right moment.
