Shane’s comeback: the power of support, mentorship and a fresh start

After more than two years without work, supporting a large family and feeling options slipping away, Shane wasn’t sure where to begin. That all changed the moment he connected with Rose, his Workforce Australia mentor through CoAct Connect + Community Solutions.

Finding the right support at the right time

Rose didn’t just hear Shane, she understood him. She helped him explore support work, guiding him through what seemed impossible. CoAct Connect + Community Solutions stepped in, covering essential requirements: funding for his yellow and blue card, job readiness courses, timber industry orientation, and even first aid and CPR training.

The Job Ready program was by far the most useful, said Shane.

Rose ensured he had the tools and confidence he needed, everything from licence renewals to interview clothes, so when the right opportunity came, he was ready.

Landing the right role

Though he initially considered support work, Shane discovered another pathway, working at Fresh & Save. After applying online, two months passed in silence. Just when he thought he’d missed his chance, he was invited back for a second in-store interview…and he nailed it. Shane was relieved, nervous, and grateful when he landed the role.

To ease his transition, Community Solutions supported the renewal of his forklift licence, another practical step that helped him contribute meaningfully in his new job.

A fresh start for the whole family

Being back in work gave Shane more than an income, it gave him agency, pride, and hope.

Being able to plan again is amazing, he reflects.
I’m walking a little taller, and I can say yes to my wife and kids more now.

He’s most proud of embracing change: showing up for every opportunity, trusting the process, and being open to what lay ahead.

Shane’s advice to others

Shane is living proof that with the right support and a willingness to try new things, it’s possible to turn things around. His advice?
