Can you access remote support coordination anywhere in Australia?
Did you know NDIS support coordination can be delivered remotely, by phone, video call, or email? This means people living outside major cities, in regional areas, or in places with limited local providers can still access quality coordination support.
How remote support coordination works
Remote support coordination follows the same principles as in-person coordination. Your support coordinator works with you to understand your plan, connect with providers, set up services, and keep everything running smoothly, just through a phone or video call rather than face-to-face.
Tools like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, email, and SMS make it possible to maintain a consistent, responsive relationship even when you and your coordinator are geographically far apart.
Is remote coordination as effective?
For many people, yes. The most important thing is finding a support coordinator who communicates well, follows through on what they say, and genuinely understands your needs. Whether that happens in person or by phone is often less important than the quality of the relationship and the coordination work itself.
That said, some people — particularly those with communication or cognitive support needs — may benefit more from in-person contact, at least initially. It’s worth discussing this when you’re choosing a coordinator.
Finding providers in regional and remote areas
One of the real challenges in regional and remote Australia is the limited number of local NDIS providers. A remote support coordinator who understands this can help you identify what’s available locally, explore whether non-registered providers are an option (if you’re self or plan-managed), and connect you with community-based supports that may not be formal NDIS services.
Additional support for remote and rural participants
The NDIS provides additional funding supplements for participants in remote and very remote areas to account for the higher costs of service delivery. If you’re in a remote area, make sure this is reflected in your plan. For more information, visit the NDIS remote and rural participants page.
