May’s story: turning opportunity into action

May joined CoAct Connect + Five Bridges in 2025 and straight away showed she was ready to make changes. She was keen to overcome challenges, set goals, and build a stronger future for herself. With her new mentor, Carmen, by her side, May was ready to take the next step.

Before joining, May had lost her phone. This made it hard to stay in touch with her employer, confirm appointments, or meet her obligations. Even with these setbacks, she stayed committed to her casual job at the Indigenous Knowledge Centre (Library) in Woorabinda — a role she truly valued.

When Woorabinda hosted a Government Services Round-Up, May attended knowing her job provider would be there. It turned out to be the perfect timing. She met Carmen and officially started her journey with Five Bridges that very day.

Instead of waiting, May took action. With Carmen’s support, she:

  • Applied for her Blue Card
  • Updated her details with Services Australia, including her new phone number
  • Spoke with Transport and Main Roads and booked her driving test for the very next morning
  • Connected with Yellow Card Services to learn more about eligibility and requirements

In just a few hours, May achieved what might have taken over six months if she had to travel out of her community.

I was a little nervous to do my test, I nearly said no! But I’m so happy I went through with it. Now I’ve got my licence and can drive. said May.

With her licence and Blue Card, May is in a strong position to take on more hours at the library. Her role will soon expand to include children’s programs like book clubs — something she’s excited about. But her goals go even further. Inspired by her mentor, May dreams of a career in community services, where she can give back and support others in need.

May’s story shows what can happen when determination meets opportunity. With the right support at the right time, she has turned her challenges into a pathway to success.
