Mark’s story: from caring at home to a career in support

A new chapter begins

For more than 14 years, Mark put his own life on hold to care for his elderly mum. Every day was about making sure she was safe and well. But when her care needs eased, Mark was left asking himself an important question, “What’s next for me?”

The thought of finding work again after such a long time felt scary. Mark didn’t have recent job experience, he wasn’t confident with technology, and he had doubts about whether employers would give him a chance.

That’s when he reached out to CoAct Connect + Community Solutions Gladstone, and everything started to change.

Support that made the difference

Mark was introduced to an Employment Mentor who took the time to listen. Instead of seeing his age and long career break as problems, his mentor saw strength.

Mark had something you can’t teach, dedication and heart,” his mentor explained. “He had given so much of himself for years, and that’s the type of commitment employers value.

Through the Career Transition Assistance (CTA) program, Mark learned digital skills like using email and filling out online job applications. He also got help to write a resume that showed off the caring skills he had gained while looking after his mum.

With one-on-one coaching, Mark began to believe in himself again. By the time he finished the program, he had something he hadn’t felt in years, hope.

Finding his calling

During a follow-up session with his mentor, Mark realised something powerful. Caring wasn’t just something he had done for his mum, it was something he truly cared about. With help from his Employment Mentor and Recruitment Specialist, he began applying for NDIS support worker roles.

Within weeks, Mark’s patience, empathy and lived experience made him stand out to employers. He was soon offered full-time work as an NDIS Support Worker.

I never thought I’d be here,” Mark said. “For years, I thought my time had passed. But now, I wake up with purpose. Community Solutions believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.

Building a career, not just a job

Getting the job was just the beginning. With extra support through the Skilling Queenslanders for Work program, Mark enrolled in a Certificate III in Individual Support. Now he works full-time while studying part-time to grow his career in the care sector.

His journey shows how the right guidance at the right time can open doors that once felt closed.

I’m proud of what I’ve achieved,” Mark shared. “I went from having no direction to building a future I’m excited about.

A message of hope

Mark’s story is about more than just finding work. It’s about rediscovering his confidence, turning personal experience into professional skills, and showing that it’s never too late to start again.

With the right support, he went from being a carer at home to building a career that makes a real difference in people’s lives.
