Looking after your mental health while seeking employment

Searching for work can sometimes feel like a full-time job on its own. It takes energy, patience and a lot of courage to keep putting yourself out there. If you live with a mental health condition, it can sometimes feel even harder. The good news is there are ways to make the process a little easier and kinder on yourself. This article will share simple tips to help you look after your mental health while you are looking for work.

Take breaks and set boundaries

It is easy to spend hours scrolling through job ads or filling in applications. But long stretches of job hunting without rest can leave you drained and stressed.

Try setting limits, like one or two hours a day for job search. Then give yourself time to switch off and do something else, such as going for a walk, cooking a nice meal, or chatting with a friend. Boundaries help you balance your day and prevent burnout.

Stay connected with others

Looking for work can sometimes feel lonely, especially if you have been out of a job for a while. Keeping in touch with family, friends, or even your consultant can help you feel supported.

You do not have to talk about jobs all the time. Just sharing time with people who care about you can boost your mood and give you more energy for the job search.

Look after your body

Your mind and body are connected. Simple things like eating well, sleeping enough, and moving your body can make a big difference. You do not need to run a marathon. Even a short walk around the block, stretching, or dancing to music you enjoy can help lift your mood.

Break tasks into small steps

Big tasks, like writing a resume or preparing for an interview, can feel overwhelming. Try breaking them into smaller steps. For example:

  • First, update your contact details on your resume
  • Next, add your most recent job or volunteering role
  • Then, ask someone you trust to check it

Each small step is progress. Celebrate those wins, no matter how small they may seem.

Practise mindfulness

Mindfulness is about being present in the moment. You might try simple breathing exercises, noticing what you can see or hear around you, or even colouring in. These activities can calm your mind and help manage anxious thoughts. There are also free apps and videos online that guide you through short mindfulness practices.

Reach out for support

It is okay to ask for help. You can also connect with services that specialise in mental health support. Sometimes just sharing how you feel can make a big difference.

Finding a job can take time, and it is normal to feel ups and downs along the way. By taking care of your mental health, you give yourself the best chance to keep going and to feel more confident.
