Jonathan gains his independence with a little help from CoAct
At 19 years old, Jonathan was ready to head out into the world of employment. The Disability Employment Services team at CoAct Connect Stones Corner helped him do just that.
19 year-old Jonathan started getting support from CoAct Connect Stones Corner in March this year. Jonathan has autism, and had never had a job before, and wasn’t sure where to start with his job search. Jonathan was paired with Tracy, a CoAct specialist and mentor, who spent some time with him to find out exactly what he needed.
Understanding Jonathan’s story and needs
When Jonathan first met with Tracy he struggled with communication and had difficulty understanding social cues, but Tracy was able to work with Jonathan to help him overcome some of those barriers in his search for employment.
Having never worked before, Jonathan wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted to do, or what type of job he wanted. One thing he did know was that he would be best suited to a role without crowds or noise. Because of his sensory issues he knew he wouldn’t be suited to a loud shopping centre, or a high-pressure work environment.
Tracy asked Jonathan to write down his likes and dislikes and when she got the list back some things became clear: Jonathan wanted a job that was quiet, simple and straightforward that could provide clear structure and repetitiveness.
Tracy assured him that that was absolutely ok, and she set to work finding him a job that would suit his needs, with an employer who could actively support him in his transition into work.
Trusted employer connections
Tracy reached out to Glen, the Manager for QLD of ICS, a commercial cleaning company. Glen has worked with CoAct before and understands the diverse needs of CoAct clients. Glen is a big advocate for his employees. He offers both support and guidance and is always happy to be flexible if it means happier staff and more sustainable employment.
Glen agreed to meet with Jonathan, and less than 3 weeks after his initial appointment with CoAct, Jonathan had landed a job with ICS. Glen was able to offer Jonathan a commercial cleaning role where he could work in a quiet environment, be completely autonomous, and work at his own pace. Jonathan was thrilled.
A tailored, supported start to work
Jonathan started off working 8 hours a week in his new job. He was able to choose whether he’d prefer to work early in the mornings or late in the evenings. Tracy assisted him with onsite support during the transition to ensure that everything went smoothly.
Tracy and Glen worked together to create a routine that would work well for Jonathan. Together they created check list for him to follow and check off during his work shift so he could easily see what was needed each day.
A great outcome
Jonathan has been employed with ICS now for over three months. He hasn’t missed a single day of work and receives glowing feedback from his managers. Jonathan meets regularly with Tracy as part of his Post Placement Support and says he’s really happy to have gained not only confidence but financial independence for the first time in his life.
