Job Carving for Job Seekers

What is job carving? Job carving is the act of designing, adjusting or personalising a job role so that the position can be more successfully performed by the person doing – or applying for – the job. In short: instead of expecting an employee to fit perfectly into a pre-existing job mould, we change the mould so that it perfectly fits the person who will be doing the job. Genius, right?

Every job seeker has their own unique skills and abilities, and job carving allows us to take those skills and abilities into consideration in a more personal way. It takes a little more time than regular recruitment strategies, because it requires a deeper relationship with both the candidate and the employer – but the benefits far outweigh the added time investment.

By getting to know the candidate and by gaining a clear understanding of what they can (and can’t) do, we are able to create customised employment opportunities so that candidates find a role in which they can truly thrive.

Job carving is particularly powerful when working with people with disabilities who may require additional accommodations in the workplace.

4 Steps to Successful Job Carving

Trust – The biggest contributing factor in job carving success is our ability to create powerful community relationships. If you’re going to work with an employer to carve up their preexisting ideas about what they need in an employee for a particular role that takes a lot of trust. So that’s where we start.

Time – Getting to know our customers on a deeper level allows us a greater understanding of not only what they can offer a potential employer, but what they need in order to thrive at work. Likewise for the employer; in order to job carve effectively you need to have a solid understanding of what is required in the role so the employer is getting what they need as well.

Connection – We have deep ties to the local communities that we serve and those connections are invaluable. Connecting the right candidate to the right employer is crucial to ensure a perfect fit for both the candidate and the employer.

Support – We provide ongoing on-site support for our customers to ensure they have the best possible chance of success.

One of the wonderful things about job carving is that it puts the emphasis on ability. It allows people to show off their unique skills and talents, which fosters a sense of empowerment and makes them feel more valued in the workplace. When employees feel empowered and valuable job satisfaction and productivity is increased. It’s win-win for everyone.
