Jeneya’s story: uncertainty to industry success
Jeneya’s story: uncertainty to industry success
How Jeneya secured her dream job
At the start of 2025, Jeneya was unemployed and unsure of where life was heading. As a single mum, she carried the heavy responsibility of providing for her family while also trying to build a stable future. The uncertainty weighed on her.
“It was tough not knowing where I belonged or what I could do long term,” Jeneya said.
With the support from CoAct Connect + Community Solutions Gladstone, she found casual work at a local bar as a Food and Beverage Attendant. To help her succeed, she gained her Responsible Service of Gambling certificate. Even though the job gave her experience, Jeneya knew it wasn’t the career she wanted for the future. She wanted something more secure, something that could grow with her.

Choosing a new path
That’s when Jeneya started working closely with community Solutions and her Mentor. Together, they looked at long-term career options. With Gladstone’s industrial sector growing fast, Jeneya saw a chance to take a bold new path.
She enrolled in a Women in Industry Program; a program designed especially for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who want to start careers in Gladstone’s thriving industry.
The training included:
- Technical skills to meet industry standards
- Safety and compliance training for sites
- Industry-recognised tickets needed for plant and site work
- Practical experience on real projects to build confidence and teamwork skills
Participants also had one-on-one mentoring, cultural support and direct links to job opportunities. For Jeneya, this was a turning point.
Commitment that stood out
Jeneya didn’t have a driver’s licence, but that didn’t stop her. With the help of her support team, she was given a push bike and rode it every single day to attend training. Rain or shine, she showed up.
Her dedication impressed her course instructor, Letia, who said,
“She showed up every single day, ready to give her best. Her work ethic and positive attitude stood out to everyone.”
The push bike became more than just a way to get around. It was a symbol of her commitment to changing her life.
A bright future at QAL
Now, after months of training and hard work, Jeneya has secured a full-time role at Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) with Dimeo as part of the Utilities Team. QAL is one of the largest alumina refineries in the world and offers strong opportunities for safety, career growth and stability.
For Jeneya, this new role is more than just a job. It is a career pathway with the chance to grow and provide for her family.
“I feel proud of myself for taking this step. It shows that with the right support, you can achieve anything,” she said.
The power of support
Jeneya’s success is not only about her determination, but also about the power of community and partnerships. With the backing of Community Solutions, she had the chance to train, grow and step into a stable career.
“Jeneya’s determination, along with the community and training partnerships, shows what is possible when people work together.” a Community Solutions team member explained
Her story is a powerful reminder that the right mix of resilience, support and opportunity can lead to life-changing outcomes.
