Jacob finds his ‘key’ to employment

Jacob proudly flashes his new master key from his new employer, the Compass Group Ltd, as a milestone of how his life has turned around – and the smile on his face says it all.

When CoAct Intensive Case Manager Desiree first met job seeker Jacob in February 2018, he had no license, no transport, no birth certificate or ID papers, limited job training qualifications, and out-of-date resume and significant literacy challenges.

These significant challenges placed Jacob in the most disadvantaged job seeker groups, but that didn’t deter Desiree. Together, Desiree and Jacob tacked all of his challenges and even trialed some work placements to get him job-ready.

After almost twelve months of hard work and ongoing, intensive support from Desiree, Jacob is celebrating his new full-time role as a Handyperson Worker at the Compass ESS Eureka Village, situated at BHP’s Goonyella Riverside Mine, Moranbah.

For Jacob, this meant that he’s now fully exceeding all of his job plan goals he set out with Desiree. It’s been a long hard road for Desiree, but the results are certainly now speaking for themselves.

Along with all of CoAct’s Intensive Case Managers, Desiree invested so much time and effort into Jacob’s employment journey that she now calls him her “Gold plated job seeker”.

As an Intensive Case Manager, Desiree has a small caseload of 30 job seekers, managing their individual needs and barriers to employment, guiding them towards achieving sustainable employment.

There’s no barrier that I’m not willing to try and overcome for my job seekers.

Jacob has finally found his dream job for life’ at Eureka Camp and working with people like Desiree has made Jacob extremely happy to the point that he said,

I love this job so much I want to die here!

Jacob’s role has so much diversity from changing tap washers to grounds keeping duties, which means he’s never bored. Jacob is so enthusiastic that his supervisor has recognised it and has allocated him, his own work buggy/golf cart to travel around the site.
