How Impulse Purchase Specialists embraced inclusive hiring with Thomas

Impulse Purchase Specialists, a Sydney-based business, has become a prime example of the benefits of inclusive hiring by providing meaningful employment to Thomas, a 24-year-old with an intellectual disability. For over four years, Thomas has flourished in his role, thanks to a supportive team and tailored guidance from CoAct/Ability Options.

Creating a role tailored for success

Thomas’s employer, Andrew Mackenzie, and his team have gone above and beyond to create a position that suits Thomas’s abilities, including office management tasks like stocking supplies, cleaning, and office upkeep. This custom-fit approach not only provides Thomas with meaningful work but also ensures the business benefits from his hard work and positive attitude.

“We love having Thomas on the team,” said Andrew. “He brings a unique energy and is an essential part of our business.”

Support and growth with CoAct/Ability Options

Through CoAct/Ability Options Disability Employment Services (DES), Thomas receives personalised support from his Workforce Partner, Courtney. She helps Thomas with time management, improving motor skills, and increasing his independence in the workplace. Thomas now confidently works an hour of each shift on his own—a major milestone in his journey.

Positive workplace culture

Thomas’s team loves his energy and sense of humour. From telling jokes to spontaneous dance moments, he brings joy to the workplace, brightening the day for his colleagues. His manager, Perri, shared that the team misses Thomas when he’s not at work: “Thomas is an important part of our team. His presence lifts everyone’s spirits.”

Impact on business

Andrew Mackenzie, the business owner, shared that hiring Thomas has positively impacted the team dynamic, creating a supportive and inclusive culture. “Thomas has become an integral part of our workplace, and we are lucky to have him,” said Andrew.

Looking ahead

With CoAct/Ability Options’ ongoing support, Thomas is working towards increasing his independent work hours, saving for a home, and continuing to make his colleagues’ lives brighter. His journey shows the incredible impact that inclusive hiring can have—not just on the employee, but on the entire workplace.
