Helping reboot local job opportunities

CoAct Service Partner Community Solutions is helping reboot local employment by working closely with businesses in the area to advise them on support services and available funding to create opportunities for job seekers, just like Collinsville local Jamaine Miller.

Living in a North Queensland town of 2500 people can make it challenging for young people such as Jamaine to find employment, especially when you have limited work experience. But support from Community Solutions Bowen has helped him make the right connections to land a local tech job.

Community Solutions Bowen Employment Consultant Jenna Cameron says that although Jamaine lacked experience, he clearly had the passion and skillset for IT.

Career counselling and support

Through career counselling, Jenna was able to discover more about Jamaine’s goals and love of technology. She worked closely with him to discuss job options and the type of support Jamaine would need to find and keep a job.

Jamaine was eligible for jobactive, a government-funded program connecting job seekers with employers. As a local jobactive provider, Community Solutions was able to develop a comprehensive Job Plan and also enrol Jamaine on a first aid course and help fund his new work uniform.

Jamaine’s PaTH to employment

Jenna says a great attitude is key to any job seeker’s success and Jamaine’s easy-going disposition and knack for customer service instantly appealed to local employer, Collinsville Connect Telecentre.

This local business is the perfect fit for Jamaine, as it delivers complete Information Technology services and support to the Collinsville and Scottville communities. However, as a small not-for-profit, funds for recruiting staff are limited.

Thanks to a four-week PaTH internship, Collinsville Connect were able to trial Jamaine and further federal wage subsidies coupled with State Government Youth Boost scheme have led to a permanent part-time position (25 hours per week).

With the possibility of career development through the company’s succession planning, the future looks bright.

Jamaine is now enrolled in a Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology course with an online RTO and will be studying this whilst he is working and was able to take advantage of the Queensland Government’s Certificate 3 Guarantee subsidising the cost of the course dramatically.*

Life has definitely changed for the better and now that Jamaine has a stable income he’s been able to purchase a lounge suite and TV to make home a great place to relax after a day at work.
