A new beginning: Gary’s courage to try again

Gary, a proud Indigenous man from Rockhampton, had been long-term unemployed. At 65, he thought his age and extended time away from the workforce made finding a job nearly impossible.

I just didn’t think anyone would want to give me a go. Gary admitted.

Although he had a driver’s licence, not having a car made job hunting difficult. The challenges he faced often left him feeling discouraged and doubtful.

Gary had already started working with the team at CoAct/Five Bridges Rockhampton when he and his mentor, Eboni, began exploring employment options together. Eboni became a steady source of encouragement, helping Gary build his confidence and reminding him that his journey wasn’t over.

Building confidence through learning

With Eboni’s guidance, Gary enrolled in several training programs including Careers Transition Assistance, Peak Care, and Financial Fitness. These programs helped him gain practical skills, improve his job readiness, and most importantly, rebuild his self-confidence.

Gary shared that Eboni’s encouragement made a big difference: “She really backed me the whole way and kept reminding me I had something to offer.”
Initially, Gary and Eboni discussed the possibility of volunteer work as a way to gain experience and re-engage with the workforce. But before that could take shape, an exciting opportunity came along.

From setback to strength: a role that fits

One day, Five Bridges connected with a company dedicated to supporting First Nations people. They were looking for someone who not only understood but also respected cultural values and community needs. Eboni immediately thought of Gary.

He aced the interview. The employer was so impressed, they adjusted the job role to suit Gary’s needs. His age and life experience were seen as strengths—not barriers.

Now, Gary has a role where he helps others in his community. He’s proud, fulfilled, and living proof that it’s never too late to start again.

I feel proud of myself—it took a long time to get here, but now I get to give back, and that means everything to me. Gary said.

Gary’s story is a powerful reminder that with determination, the right support, and someone who believes in you, a fresh start is always possible—no matter your age or past challenges.
