First job after high school? Here’s how to stand out and land your first role
Starting your job search after leaving high school can feel overwhelming. You’re stepping into a whole new world with lots of competition and plenty of unanswered questions. But don’t worry, there are ways to stand out and give yourself the best chance of landing your first job.
While there’s plenty of generic advice out there, like “write a resume” or “search job boards,” we’re here to share less obvious tips to help you get ahead. Let’s dive in!
1. Tailor your resume, even if you don’t have much experience
You might not have years of work experience yet, but that doesn’t mean your resume can’t impress. Instead of listing everything you’ve ever done, focus on the skills and experiences that relate to the job. If you’re applying for a customer service role, highlight teamwork from sports or communication skills from school projects. Volunteering, part-time jobs, or even hobbies can show you’re reliable, motivated, and ready to work.
2. Use social media to your advantage
Employers often check social media profiles, so make sure yours reflects positively on you. It doesn’t have to be super professional. Just free from anything that might raise eyebrows.
Also, consider creating a LinkedIn profile. Even if you don’t have much work experience, you can add school achievements, volunteering, and skills. A polished LinkedIn profile shows you’re serious about your career.
3. Volunteer or take on internships
If you’re struggling to land your first job, volunteering or interning can help you gain experience, build your resume, and make valuable connections. Even a few hours a week at a local organisation or small business can give you an edge when applying for roles.
4. Network with people in your community
Networking isn’t just for seasoned professionals. Let your family, friends, teachers, and even neighbours know you’re looking for work, they might know someone who’s hiring!
You can also explore local noticeboards or ask businesses in your area if they’re looking for staff. Many small businesses don’t advertise online and hire directly through walk-ins.
5. Don’t be afraid to cold email employers
Is there a company you’d love to work for but don’t see any job ads? Send them a polite email or connect via Linkedin! Introduce yourself, explain why you’re interested in their business, and attach your resume. This proactive approach works well, especially with small businesses, and shows employers you’re enthusiastic and willing to go the extra mile.
6. Keep applying and stay positive
Your first job might not come right away, and that’s okay. Treat every application and interview as a learning experience. Keep improving your resume, practicing your interview skills, and applying to jobs regularly. Every “no” brings you closer to a “yes.”
