Intensive support helps Ethin find meaningful work

With the right specialist support, Ethin found a job, some much needed confidence, and a whole new career path with room for progression.

When Christeen from CoAct/Ability Options Liverpool first met Ethin he was quiet and respectful, but a little bit lost. Ethin didn’t know what he wanted to do for work or how to navigate finding a job. All he knew was that his mum said he needed to find one. Ethin’s intellectual disability meant that formal education had been a challenge for him and because of that he didn’t believe he’d be able to find a job. He didn’t know what he wanted to do and struggled to set goals.

Getting to know Ethin

Determined to help him find his place in the world, Christeen took Ethin under her wing. She met regularly with Ethin to get to know his personality, find out about his interests, build up his confidence, and figure out the best path for his future.

When a vacancy came up for a school crossing supervisor, Christeen knew it would be perfect for him.

Support for applying and interviewing

Christeen helped Ethin to create a resume and cover letter, sent off his official application and later, when they heard that he’d progressed to the next round in the application process, they did some one-on-one interview skills coaching so that he’d feel confident when the time came to attend an interview.

Interview day came, and it went so well that Ethin was offered the job. He was thrilled!

“I’m so excited to start at my new job. Christeen has helped me so much and I already feel much more confident. I think this is going to be really fun” – Ethin

Getting ready for work

Christeen helped Ethin get his police check and working with children check so that he was officially able to start the job. She assisted him in completing his pre-employment pack and provided him with all his protective clothing and footwear for his first day at work.

Not just a job – a job with career prospects

Ethin has been working in the role for a few months now and is enjoying it so much that he has decided to pursue a career in traffic control. This decision gives Ethin the opportunity to progress in his career, and Christeen from CoAct/Ability Options will continue to support him in achieving this goal.

“When I first met Ethin he was a little bit quiet and lost, he has now grown into such a confident young man. He is so happy in his job and is excited about his future. He can’t wait to start working toward becoming a traffic controller.” – Christeen
