Employer of the Year award celebrates new job opportunities for the Bowen community

Woolworths Bowen, nominated by Community Solutions Bowen, has been announced as the winner of the 2018 Employer of the Year Award at the CoAct 20th Anniversary celebration evening in Sydney.

The Employer of the year award recognises the strong relationships built between a CoAct Service Partner and local employer which is critical to sourcing opportunities for all job seekers.

This year judges were looking for employers with a commitment to community connections and diversity in the workplace.

Bowen is situated in the northern region of the Whitsundays, with the job opportunities in the area hit hard over the past five years due to the slowdown in the rail and mining sectors. Community Solutions Bowen Employment Consultant, Jenna Cameron nominated Woolworths Bowen for the award for their inclusive recruitment culture and commitment to job seekers in the local community.

“In my experience, Woolworths Bowen store management are keen to support the local economy and the people of the district, providing opportunities for the whole community,” she said.

“We have consistently worked with the Woolworths Bowen team since an exciting meeting back in January 2017 to discuss the type of work opportunities that could be possible for our community members.”

Jenna Cameron says that the most important qualities are for a job seeker to be proactive and reliable.

“A candidate just needs a can-do attitude as Woolworths delivers quality training and guidance for new staff who may have little or no work experience history,” she said.

Community Solutions has delivered a number of initiatives to help Woolworths Bowen meet their workforce requirements including access to the Host to Hire, PaTH internship and jobactive wage subsidies programs. Jenna Cameron says this is a great opportunity for employers to trial and train individuals whilst using the subsidies available through the state and federal governments.

“Over the past 15 months, Woolworths Bowen has taken on 12 people through Community Solutions, including five interns and are always willing to provide any additional support to ensure the workplace is suitable to each individual’s needs.”
