Elliott’s journey: turning challenges into opportunities
Elliott’s journey: turning challenges into opportunities
For Elliott, a proud resident of Woorabinda, finding meaningful employment hasn’t always been easy. With limited reading and writing skills, securing and keeping a job was a challenge. But thanks to his perseverance and the right support from his mentor Carmen from Five Bridges, Elliott is now on an exciting path towards a promising future.
Taking the First Step
In 2023, Elliott joined Five Bridges, eager to find job opportunities and gain new skills. His determination paid off in February 2024 when he landed a casual role with the Parks and Gardens team at the Woorabinda Council. This job was more than just work—it was a stepping stone towards building his confidence and independence.
Reflecting on this milestone, Elliott shared, “It felt really good to start working with the council. For the first time, I felt like I was contributing and moving forward.”
Overcoming Barriers to Learning
Living in a remote community like Woorabinda can make it difficult to access training. Transport to nearby towns isn’t always an option, and many courses require specific qualifications. Recognising this, Five Bridges organised a White Card course locally, a key requirement for construction jobs.
Despite his literacy challenges, Elliott saw this as a great opportunity. Initially, his mother accompanied him to assist with the course, but when she had to leave early for work, his mentor, Carmen, stepped in. Sitting beside him, she provided the guidance and support he needed to complete the training successfully.
Carmen recalls, “Elliott didn’t give up, not even when things were tough. Seeing his determination and courage was inspiring. He earned that White Card through sheer willpower and focus.”
Earning his White Card was a huge achievement, giving Elliott the confidence to aim even higher.
Setting New Goals
With his White Card in hand, Elliott is now working towards an even bigger goal—completing a railway course in Rockhampton. He knows this qualification could open doors to full-time employment in the rail industry, something he is eager to pursue.
Elliott is also focused on getting his driver’s license, which will further boost his independence and job opportunities. With ongoing support from Carmen, he is studying online and attending in-person training whenever possible. He’s focused on completing his railway certification and, by the end of the year, securing full-time work in the rail sector.
He explains, “Getting my White Card was just the start. I’m excited about working in rail—it’s something I didn’t think was possible before. Carmen and Five Bridges have helped me see what I can achieve.”
A Story of Determination and Support
Elliott’s story is a powerful reminder that with resilience and the right support, anything is possible. From his first casual job to pursuing a long-term career, he is proving that no challenge is too big to overcome.
The team at Five Bridges takes great pride in stories like Elliott’s. “Our mission is to empower individuals to overcome barriers and achieve their goals. Elliott’s success is a testament to what’s possible when we work together to make a difference,” says a Five Bridges representative.
His journey serves as an inspiration to others facing similar struggles—showing that every small step forward brings you closer to your dreams. With determination, support, and a clear goal, the future is full of possibilities for Elliott.
