Craig sets a goal and backs himself
Craig joined CoAct Connect + BUSY At Work Aitkenvale in July 2022 with a clear goal. He wanted a casual or part time job. From the start, he showed determination and a real willingness to learn. But he was also honest about his worries.
As an older job seeker, Craig felt concerned that his age might make it harder to find work.
I was worried that being older would count against me,” Craig said. “I wasn’t sure if anyone would give me a go.

Building skills and confidence step by step
With support from his mentor Jess, Craig began to tackle those concerns. Jess worked closely with him to focus on his strengths and build his confidence. Together, they created a plan that included upskilling and practical preparation for work.
One big milestone was Craig completing his Food Handlers Certificate. This qualification opened the door to hospitality roles and gave Craig a boost in confidence. Jess also provided ongoing encouragement, reminding him that persistence matters and that the right opportunity would come.
Craig never gave up,” Jess said. “He kept learning, kept applying and kept believing that something would work out.
With support from the Employer Recruitment Partner as well, Craig stayed active and ready for the right chance.
A new role and loving the work
In October 2025, the opportunity arrived for Craig to proudly start a new role as a kitchen hand at a local patisserie. It was a moment he had been working towards for a long time.
Today, Craig says he loves his job. He enjoys being part of a team and having a routine. Most of all, he feels proud that he pushed through his doubts and reached his goal.
Craig’s story is a strong reminder that with the right support, confidence building and persistence, employment goals can be achieved at any age.
