How Bowen Flexi Care leads the way in inclusive hiring

Bowen Flexi Care, a community-based respite and care provider in Queensland, is a shining example of how inclusive hiring can be a win-win for both employers and employees. When Brent, a local man with an intellectual disability, needed a role that suited his abilities and interests, Bowen Flexi Care stepped up. With the help of CoAct, they tailored a gardening and maintenance position specifically for Brent, allowing him to contribute meaningfully to the workplace while doing what he loves.

Tailored employment for real impact

By collaborating with CoAct and utilising the job carving process, Bowen Flexi Care created a role that met both the organisation’s needs and Brent’s strengths. Brent now works eight hours a week across three days, fully supported by his NDIS-funded workers, performing tasks like lawn mowing, car washing, and garden maintenance. This inclusive approach to hiring not only filled a role within the organisation but gave Brent a new sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Ongoing support for long-term success

A hands-on partnership between Bowen Flexi Care and CoAct ensures that Brent is not just employed but thriving in his role. The visible pride Brent takes in his work is a testament to the positive impact that inclusive hiring can have on both employees and employers.

Bowen Flexi Care’s example shows that with the right support and mindset, hiring individuals with disabilities can bring tremendous value to a business. Tailoring roles to fit the employee’s skills, as Bowen Flexi Care did, results in dedicated and motivated workers who take pride in their contributions. It also strengthens the organisation’s commitment to community and inclusivity.
