Stay motivated this winter: Smart tips for job seekers

Feeling the chill in the air and struggling to get moving in the morning? You’re not alone. The colder months can make everything, from getting out of bed to job searching, feel a little harder.

If you’ve found your motivation slipping during winter, it’s completely normal. But that doesn’t mean you need to stay stuck. There are simple, practical ways to boost your energy, stay focused, and keep moving toward your goals, even when the weather isn’t playing nice.

Here are some motivation hacks to help you beat the winter slump and stay job-ready:

Soak up the sun (even a little)

Winter brings shorter days, which can leave you feeling low on energy. One easy way to lift your mood? Get outside during daylight hours, even if it’s just for 10 minutes. Sunlight helps your body produce vitamin D and keeps your internal clock ticking right, both of which impact your mood, focus and energy levels. Take a walk during your break, sit near a sunny window, or plan your errands around the middle of the day.

Keep a consistent routine

When it’s cold and grey outside, it’s tempting to sleep in or push things off. But sticking to a regular routine can help give your day structure and purpose, especially if you’re between jobs or working towards employment. Plan your day the night before (including job applications or appointments) and block out time for job searching, learning, and self-care.

Eat well to stay energised

Comfort food cravings are real in winter but too much sugar or fast food can leave you feeling flat. Eating nutritious food helps you stay sharp and motivated. Start the day with a warm breakfast packed with protein (like oats or eggs) and keep easy snacks handy. Fruit, nuts, or a boiled egg can go a long way (and don’t forget water)!

Reach out and check in

Feeling isolated or down? Many people feel the same way during winter. Whether you’re in training, looking for work, or between gigs, staying connected can help keep you grounded. Catch up with a friend, even if it’s just a quick message or phone call, join a community or social group, or speak with your employment consultant. We’re here to help!

Set small, achievable goals

If the big picture feels overwhelming, zoom in. Setting short-term goals can help build momentum and give you a sense of accomplishment, especially during slower periods. Update your resume or cover letter using the Campus online system and plan a reward (big or small) when you hit your application target.

Boost your mood with music

Music has the power to change your mood, pump you up, or help you focus. Whether you’re writing a cover letter or heading out for an appointment, a great playlist can help shake off the winter blues. Create different playlists for different tasks: focus, motivation, or relaxation.

Take care of your mental health

Your mental well-being matters. If you’re feeling stuck, unmotivated, or down for more than a few days, it’s okay to ask for help. Support is available, and you’re not in this alone.

Support options:

  • Reach out to your Employment Consultant

  • Call services like Beyond Blue or Lifeline

  • Speak with a GP or counsellor about how you’re feeling.

Final thought

Winter might be tough, but it’s not forever. By taking small, consistent steps, you can stay motivated, build confidence, and be ready to grab the right opportunity when it comes along.
