What to do after your NDIS plan is approved

Your NDIS plan has been approved: congratulations! But what happens next? For many participants (and their families), the period immediately after approval can feel overwhelming.

Here’s a clear, practical guide to getting started.

Step 1: Read through your plan carefully

Take time to read your plan from start to finish. Look for:

  • Your goals: what you told the NDIS you want to work toward
  • Your funded supports: what categories of support are included and how much
  • Your plan management type: self-managed, plan-managed, or NDIA-managed
  • Whether Support Coordination is included

If anything is unclear, don’t worry, there are people who can help (see our article on who can help you understand your plan).

Step 2: Contact your support coordinator (if you have one)

If support coordination is funded in your plan, your first step is to contact a support coordinator or accept a referral to one. They will help you understand your plan and work through what comes next. Don’t have a support coordinator yet? We may be able to help you through CoAct Support Coordination.

Step 3: Set up plan management (if applicable)

If your plan is plan-managed, you’ll need to choose a plan manager. They’ll handle invoices and help you track your funding. This needs to be set up before your providers can start billing your plan.

Step 4: Identify the supports you need

Think about what supports are most important to you right now. What will help you most in daily life? What do you want to work toward? Write these down — it will help when you start talking to providers.

Step 5: Find and choose providers

You have choice and control over which providers you use. You can search for registered providers on the NDIS Provider Finder, or ask your support coordinator to help you explore your options.

Step 6: Sign service agreements

Before services begin, most providers will ask you to sign a Service Agreement. This is a written agreement that explains what support will be provided, when, and how much it will cost. Read it carefully and ask questions before signing.

Step 7: Keep track of your plan

Once services are running, keep an eye on how your funding is being used. Check in with your support coordinator regularly, and start noting what’s working and what isn’t, this will be valuable when it’s time for your plan review.
