5 tips for job hunting with disability

Look after yourself

This is your gentle reminder that if you want to present the very best version of yourself at an interview you’ll need to prioritise self care and mental health before you get there.

Do your research

Take a look at every company you apply to, checking out what news articles they’ve appeared in on Google, who they work with, what services they offer, and what projects they post about on social media, especially LinkedIn. In fact the best way to stand out from the crowd is to write a cover letter that speaks directly to the recruiter of each job you apply for. You don’t need to write a new cover letter every time but an intro paragraph that mentions the company will definitely get you noticed.

Know your rights

When you start preparing for interviews you may have questions about the the law and your rights, for example, what interviewers can and can’t ask you. The short answer is that questions should always relate directly to the job and its requirements. And if your disability, illness or injury doesn’t affect your ability to do the job safely, you’re not legally obliged to talk to potential employers about it. Find out more about your rights by reading 5 questions your interviewer shouldn’t ask if you have a disability, illness or injury.
